Eraserhead - *** (61) (A rating-resistant film if I ever saw one - oh wait, I did - which admittedly is not how an NT prefers to go about this kind of thing, surrealistic or not. I guess it's unfair to make a comparison to 2001, considering it was still narrative cinema, just disjointed and symbolic, while Eraserhead is closer to cloud-gazing for shapes and objects. Of course, though Lynch declared it a field day for interpretation - such open-endedness I'd almost call complexity, and had I done so I probably would have felt pretty good about it, hence where other people are coming from - the ingenuity and control of his technical repetoire is damn near irrefutable, a level of capability, and in some respects measureability, that I really didn't see in Mulholland Drive. Problem remains though, the irony that Lynch's dream-like methods connect intellecutally but just don't do a thang for the aesthetics)
